Maestro Cleto Munari

«I aim to merge art and design in everything I do.» Cleto Munari

Cleto Munari - About

From the design of the first object with his mentor Carlo Scarpa, his search for the uniqueness of things takes shape as the natural continuation of his search for beauty. «Here, in beauty, I find myself.» The encounter with Ettore Sottsass and his collective of architects and designers, the Memphis Group, characterized by an unconventional approach to design, combining audacious geometric shapes, bold colors and eccentric motifs, has also influenced his production. Cleto Munari’s contribution to jewel design brought him international recognition: his visionary talent found its highest expression in wearable micro- architectures that go beyond the idea of traditional jewelry. His artifacts represent a “design of joy” that put together a dream and craft it into reality. Cleto Munari’s works are in the permanent collections of major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA in New York.

«Cleto Munari eyewear collection is the outcome of a visionary process made of people, expertise and joy.»

Cleto Munari Eyewear — The eyewear collection

Concave/Convex. The concept originates from an in-depth exploration of color and material: the design reveals a variation of form — concave and convex — enhancing the chromatic possibilities offered by the multilayer cellulose acetate plates. Each plate assembles 3 colors in unique, custom-made combinations, endowing color with a massive volumetric effect. Elements are combined according to formal and chromatic affinity or contrasts, which fully express the playful essence of Cleto Munari’s approach to design.

Turning ideas into matter. Cleto Munari’s natural inclination for the possibilities offered by craftsmanship, along with his constant search for skilled artisans who are able to turn into matter his exuberant ideas, led him to search for a unique framemaking workshop where craftsmanship is valued. It is in his territories that Cleto Munari has found the lively environment to develop his one-of-a-kind eyewear collection — precisely the territory of Vicenza, well-known for its goldsmith tradition that gives life to internationally praised jewelry of exceptional beauty, a prolific territory that nurtures a district of craftspeople and artisans who preserve their knowledge with their work and pass it down through generations. The collection is made in Italy in Montecchio Maggiore, Vicenza. Each frame features the finest  manufacture, thanks to a process that gives value to craftsmanship.

«Color is much more than “verb” for me: it is essence, like form.» Cleto Munari

Cleto Munari e Art & Sign — The carpet collection by Moret

Art & Sign. Art & Sign is the collection of art carpets curated by Cleto Munari for Moret. For years, Moret has entrusted the Maestro with the artistic direction of this project with the aim of searching for unique authors capable of transferring their poetry into objects made to last. Among the authors who signed the collection: Cleto Munari himself; the American poet and painter Lawrence Ferlinghetti; the Nobel Prize for Literature Dario Fo; Sandro Chia and Mimmo Paladino, both exponents of the Italian Trans-avantgarde, whose works are part of the collections of major international museums such as the MoMA in New York, the Tate Gallery in London and the Castello di Rivoli in Turin. At 2024 Salone del Mobile in Milan, Moret presents new creations from the Art & Sign collection designed by Paolo Manazza, Cleto Munari, Alberto Baccari, Giorgio Cattano.

Paolo Manazza. Moret creates a happy contamination of ideas, tradition, design and advanced technology “capable of transforming a painting into a digital reproduction” by taking a canvas by artist Paolo Manazza. After studying ancient painting and the informal results of the New York School and the European Art Post-1950, Paolo Manazza experiments with chromatic superimpositions in a neo-informal art that combines the strength of gestures with the vibrations of color. The “Untitled” carpet by Paolo Manazza, presented at Salone del Mobile 2024, will be exhibited at the Punto Ottico Humaneyes store in Milan until the end of April.
